Qualitative QC

Managing qualitative (pass/fail) quality control records.

Qualitative QC is for tests with a pass/fail result rather than a numeric value — malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), HIV rapid tests, urine dipsticks, pregnancy tests, and similar point-of-care tests.

How qualitative QC works

For these tests, QC is performed by running the test's positive and negative controls and confirming they give the expected result:

  • Positive control → must show a positive result
  • Negative control → must show a negative result

If either control fails, the lot is flagged as failed and should not be used for patient testing.

Entering a qualitative QC record

  1. Go to Quality & SamplesQC
  2. Click Qualitative QC tab
  3. Click New record
  4. Select the test type (e.g. Malaria RDT, HIV Ag/Ab)
  5. Enter the lot number and expiry date
  6. Record the positive control result (Pass / Fail)
  7. Record the negative control result (Pass / Fail)
  8. Enter who performed the check
  9. Click Submit

Lot management

Kanta tracks each reagent lot separately. When a new lot number arrives:

  1. Go to Quality & SamplesQCQualitative QCLots
  2. Click Add lot
  3. Enter the lot number, expiry date, and test type
  4. Perform and record QC for the new lot before using it for patients

Kanta alerts you 14 days before a lot expires so you can order a replacement in time.

Viewing QC history per lot

Click any lot number in the qualitative QC list to see its full QC history — every check performed, by whom, and the result. This record is useful for accreditation audits and root cause analysis if a test lot is later recalled.

Failed lot protocol

If a lot fails QC:

  1. Mark the lot as Failed in Kanta
  2. Quarantine the remaining stock — do not use for patients
  3. Contact the supplier for a replacement
  4. Document the failure and corrective action in the Notes field

Kanta prevents a failed lot from being selected for patient test recording until it is marked as resolved or disposed of.
