Reception / Section Capture
Capturing reception and section-level performance data.
The Reception tab within Lab Metrics shows performance metrics from the point of patient arrival through to sample collection — the pre-analytical phase that feeds directly into TAT.
What it measures
| Metric | Definition |
|---|---|
| Arrival to registration | Time from patient walking in to being registered in the system |
| Registration to collection | Waiting time from registration to blood draw or sample collection |
| Collection to lab receipt | Time for sample to travel from collection point to the lab |
| Total pre-analytical TAT | Sum of all three above phases |
| Queue length at peak | Maximum number of patients waiting simultaneously |
| Patients per hour | Average throughput at reception |
Why this matters
Most TAT breaches originate in the pre-analytical phase. If the lab processes samples quickly but patients wait 90 minutes to register, the overall TAT is still 90+ minutes. Kanta separates pre-analytical from analytical TAT so you can identify where the real bottleneck is.
Viewing the Reception tab
- Go to Lab Metrics → TAT
- Click the Reception tab at the top of the TAT page
The view shows the same date range as the main TAT dashboard. Use the date picker to change the period.
Common findings
- High "arrival to registration" times — often a staffing or system login issue at reception
- High "registration to collection" times — queue management issue; may need a second collection chair
- High "collection to receipt" times — sample transport process needs review (dedicated porter, pneumatic tube system, etc.)
